Champions of 2020
March 05, 2021
2020 was a challenging year for the fashion industry. From the loss of renowned legends including Sergio Rossi and Kenzo Takada, to the numerous cancelled fashion shows and physical events. In the sneaker world, things were changing too. Meet-ups, conventions and campouts were all made unavailable and instead, people moved towards a more digital approach to cop their next pair of shoes. Online raffles and resell sites gained popularity and the community happily embraced the change. Despite it being a difficult year, the sneaker world still thrived, releasing some of the most drool-worthy colorways and designs we’ve ever seen. From our favourite colourways, the best collaboration, biggest comeback, quickest movers to the most comfortable sneakers.
Favourite Colorway
Nike Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG “Light Smoke Grey”
Released in July, Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG in Light Smoke Grey shows off flashes of red, grey, black and white with contrasting materials. Featuring the familiar white leather on quarter panels and toe boxes, grey suede on mudguard, eyestays and heel, and not to mention the bright pop of red leather on the collar flaps, this clean colourway is lowkey enough to wear on the daily, and sharp enough to dress up an outfit.
Nike Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG ‘Dark Mocha’
If you weren’t able to cop Travis Scott’s AJ1 ‘Cactus Jack’ collaboration, these pairs of Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG in Dark Mocha might be able to satisfy your itch. Dropped last October, these pairs of high-tops combine the earthy brown hues with a crisp black-and-white colour scheme. To complete the look, the black outsoles tie everything together, giving the shoe an extra polished finish.
Best Collaboration
Dior x Nike Air Jordan 1 High
The two brands kept everyone on their toes when they postponed the international drawing of The Dior x Air Jordan collection, in particular the Jordan 1 High. With only 8,500 pairs available worldwide, 5 million people signed up for a chance to snag a pair of these home. Retailing for US$2,000 and reselling for upwards of US$20,000 on sneaker sites, these sneakers were the talk of town the entire year, especially since Travis Scott was the face of the advertisement. Of course, when the biggest NBA and football players including Otto Porter and Jayson Tatum started sporting these, everyone decided that they wanted a pair.
Ben & Jerry's x Nike Dunk Low SB 'Chunky Dunky'
A nod to one of Ben & Jerry’s iconic ice cream flavour, Chunky Monkey—a banana ice cream blended together with chocolate chunks and perfected with crunchy walnuts, Ben & Jerry's x Nike Dunk Low SB 'Chunky Dunky' is just as sweet with layers of colours and detailing that will make Ben & Jerry proud. Spotted on celebrities such as Rich The Kid and Quavo, this weird shoe combo has won the hearts of both shoe collectors and ice cream enthusiasts.
The cow print on the overlays and tongues is made with pony hair, a tribute to the well-known cow that’s on the ice cream container, while the sky blue and green hills leather print will bring you back to the meadows on the packaging as well.
Biggest Comeback
New Balance
It’s hard staying relevant in the 21st century. New Balance was one of those brands that was on the brink of becoming irrelevant. In 2020, New Balance re-released the millennial favourite 992 “dad” shoe with its signature chunky sole. Afterwards, the brand continued to amp it up by bringing in forward-thinking designers and collaborations, such as with Joe “Freshgoods” Robinson, WTAPS and a fan favourite, the Salehe Bembury collaboration.
Nike SB Dunks
It’s been 15 years since Nike SB Dunks were first released and while the hype died down after the mid-2000s, this infamous skateboarding shoe has firmly positioned itself back into the popular crowd in 2020.
Thanks to former SB designer James Arizumi rejoining the Nike family and leading the skateboard division in 2018, collaborations and hyped designs quickly followed. One of the most popular Nike dunk colourways in 2020 include Off-White x Nike Dunk Low, the SB Dunk Kentucky and Syracuse which came out early 2020, and of course, the Chunky Dunky mentioned above amongst several others.
Quickest Movers
Nike Air Jordan 11 Retro 'Jubilee’ / 25th Anniversary'
To celebrate Air Jordan’s quarter-century birthday, Nike released the Air Jordan 11 ‘Jubilee’, or Air Jordan 11 ‘25th Anniversary’ in a polished monochrome black in December. Combining a sturdy mesh material and patent leather on the shoe, while “Jordan'' is spelt out along the eyelets in Metallic Silver.
Originally retailing for US$220 when it first dropped on December 12, 2020, Stockx has seen 46327 pairs sold since, with an average sale price of US$285 and the highest sale price being a staggering US$600.
Nike Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG ‘Pine Green 2.0’
The Pine Green colourway on the classic Air Jordan 1 features the familiar two-tone colour scheme from previous popular models. The contrasting black base and green Swooshes, toebox, ankle flaps and heel panels are joined with hints of red from the tongue tabs.
Released on February 29, 2020 for US$170, Stockx has recorded 38203 sales in the last 12 month period, with an average sale price of US$230 and the highest at US$435.
Most Comfortable
Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 V2 ‘Bred’
Kanye West’s Yeezys never fail to draw a crowd. Known as one of the most comfortable pairs of shoes on the market thanks to Adidas’ boost technology, this black and red colourway was first launched in 2017 and quickly sold out. Restocked in December, the high-in-demand Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 V2 ‘Bred’ were quickly snatched up once again on the Adidas app.
Nike Air Jordan 1 High Zoom ‘Racer Blue’
Can’t afford the hefty price tag of Dior x Nike Air Jordan 1 High? Nike’s Air Jordan 1 High Zoom in ‘Racer Blue’ is a stunning replacement that could (hopefully) fill out the empty hole in your heart left by Dior and Nike’s collaboration piece. The sneaker is equipped with Nike’s Zoom Air—a technology designed for athletes who desire more cushioning while maintaining the right amount of court feel and responsiveness—the shoe features a clean grey and white colourway and a translucent outsole with hints of royal blue detailing.

With so many exciting sneaker drops in what many would call one of the worst years in history, there’s no doubt that things will only get better in 2021. While we patiently wait for the Covid-19 vaccine to be released, we’ll be researching and looking for our next cop so that we’ll be looking our best for when things fully reopen again
