Courtside Chat with
Lotta Blobs

March 23, 2022

We sat courtside with Shantelle from @lottablobs, a handmade home decor business owner who started her venture during the early COVID-19 era. She shares with us, how the COVID-19 pandemic meant that people helped her business flourish and what she has in stone for the future. Read on to find out more!

“Try to refine your brand to something that you think people are missing from their lives and I’m sure your business will be a success.”

1. Tell us about Lotta Blobs, how did your journey begin and what inspired you?

Lotta Blobs was born during the early months of the pandemic when the UK was in lockdown. I needed a creative outlet so I was playing around with some clay one uneventful day and just happened to create the wavy frame that now frames my mirrors. Initially I was inspired by freeform shapes as I'm a perfectionist and I didn't want to hinder my experimentation by focusing on creating the perfect ceramic piece.

2. How has your business grown so far? Are there any challenges/obstacles you faced?

I've been lucky that my business has grown quickly in the short time since I launched it, which I have the pandemic to thank as a lot of people had more time on social media to discover and support small businesses. I'd say a challenge I have faced is a lot of counterfeits of my designs have been copied which can be disheartening and a challenge for a small business.

3. What do you think makes @lotta.blobs different from other handmade home decor businesses?

I like to take pride in that my designs are original ideas that embody all my pleasures and inspiration that I have for art and interiors.

4. How were you able to get noticed by your customers, and how well do you know them?

I was lucky enough to get reposted by some great Instagram accounts in the early days that helped expose my business to new audiences. I'd like to think I know my customers well! Most of them are really sweet and I love that they support me and my small business friends!

5. Your instagram is very cohesive and has a lot of engagement, do you have any tips for our entrepreneurs on how to grow their small business on Social Media?

Thank you! I'd say it's good to know your own personal style which makes it much easier to have cohesive branding as in theory you end up just posting what you like rather than what's trending. I like to think people tend to gravitate more to original ideas so I'd say try to refine your brand to something that you think people are missing from their lives and i’m sure your business will be a success. Lastly, I believe it's great to support and make friends with the small business community because they really have your back on your good and bad days!

6. Where do you see Lotta Blobs a year from now?

I'm working on expanding Lotta Blobs' homeware range to more fun and colourful ceramic pieces. I'd also love to introduce art prints and maybe even apparel!

7. If your brand was compared to any "sneaker" - what pair would it be and why?

I think Lotta Blobs would be one of Converse x Golf le Fleur sneakers as they're always vivid and playful which is what I like to embody in my business!
